Consultation, Outreach, and Supervision Consultation Bureau staff members are available for consultation to students, faculty, instructors, teaching fellows, coaches, administrators, student organizations and others on any issue that affects students' lives and activities at Harvard. Any member of the University who is concerned about a particular student's welfare or functioning can feel free to call upon the Bureau. In all consultations, confidentiality of both the student and University faculty or staff member is preserved in accordance with the Bureau's confidentiality guidelines. Outreach Bureau staff members maintain affiliations with the residential Houses and the Yard dormitories, and participate in residential meetings and activities. Bureau staff members meet on request with groups of students, faculty and staff at the Bureau or elsewhere in the University (residence halls, classrooms, athletic facilities, administrative offices, etc.) to discuss any topic related to students' academic and personal wellbeing and development, e.g., Bureau services, campus issues or upsets, approaches to conflict resolution, and student skills such as time management and exam preparation. Bureau staff participate in numerous campus fairs, panels, trainings, and other outreach activities throughout the year. Supervision of Student Peer Services Student Peer Tutoring. The Bureau recruits, selects, trains, and supervises peer tutors for the Bureau-based peer tutoring programs, including On-Call and Award Peer Tutoring and the ESL Peer Tutoring Programs. The Bureau provides ready consultation for tutors and tutees in the resolution of any issues that arise in the course of tutoring. In addition, the Bureau helps recruit, select, train, and supervise peer facilitators for the course-based Study Centers in courses such as Life Sciences 1a and 1b, and Statistics 100 and 102.Student Peer Counseling and Peer Education. In conjunction with the UHS Mental Health Service, the Bureau provides training and supervision for peer counseling groups such as Contact, ECHO (Eating Concerns Hotline and Outreach), Response, Room 13, and In Common. The Bureau also provides training for other peer education groups on request, such as for CHI (Community Health Initiative), DAPA (Drug and Alcohol Peer Advisors), and Freshmen Advising Fellows. |
